The cyber threat landscape in the UK continues to develop rapidly. Proofpoint’s 2023 Voice of the CISO Report revealed that 75% of UK CISOs admitted to having to deal with the loss of sensitive data in the past year, and a massive 84% of UK CISOs feel at risk of experiencing a material cyberattack in the next 12 months (compared to 60% in 2022).
Cybercriminals are forever refining their tactics. Threat actors now realise it’s more effective, faster, and cheaper to steal credentials and log in than trying to hack through technical controls. As a result, identity theft is increasingly being used by threat actors to further their cybercriminal gains. Quite literally following a pattern, or an ‘attack chain’. Proofpoint data illustrates that in the UK, of those organisations who suffered a successful phishing attack in 2022, 43% resulted in credential theft and/or account compromise, where employees invertedly exposed their credentials, giving threat actors access to sensitive data and their accounts, allowing them to move laterally through business networks.
